Sustainable Development in the North West

North West Map

England’s Northwest is a £98 billion economy and home to 6.8 million people. Liverpool's waterfront is one of the most famous in the world and the Lake District national park has diverse habitats covering over 2,200 square kilometres.

The region contains the largest concentration of advanced manufacturing and chemicals production in the UK and major centres of population in cities such as Manchester, Preston, Lancaster and Liverpool. The Northwest's economy has been through a period of major restructuring and currently performs lower than the England average. The Regional Economic Strategy (RES) aims to build a dynamic, sustainable, knowledge-based economy with an excellent quality of life for all. Guiding principles in the RES include; living within environmental limits, achieving a sustainable economy, promoting good governance, using sound science responsibly and ensuring a strong, healthy and just society, In examining the Northwest, it is useful to look at the priorities identified in the UK Sustainable Development Strategy.
