Stand up to Climate Change on World Environment Day

Stand Up To Climate Change

The Environment Agency’s Regional Director is calling on everyone in the North West to stand up to Climate Change to mark World Environment Day (5 June 08).

Tony Dean is making the appeal to coincide with the launch of the State of the Environment report which provides the latest information about the health of the environment in the North West. The report focuses on the Environment Agency’s key areas of work including; flooding, wildlife and water quality and takes a look at the impact Climate Change is already having in the region.

Tony said: “The State of the Environment report helps us to take stock of the progress we’re making with our partners towards improving the North West environment, but we’re also working hard to prepare the region for the impacts of Climate Change. Seventy per cent of people think the UK isn’t prepared so we’re urging people in the North West to use World Environment Day as an opportunity to think about the steps they need to take now to prepare for the future. For example we may experience hotter summers and wetter winters increasing the likelihood of floods and drought.”

The State of the Environment report also highlights the significant environmental issues and concerns facing the region in the next few years including the proposed creation of half a million new homes scheduled for the North West before 2030.

He added: “We want to make sure the region’s growth is sustainable and delivered in such a way so that the homes and businesses of the future are fully equipped to adapt to the inevitable impacts of our changing climate.”
