Climate Change and Energy

Regional partners are delivering on a variety of climate change activities as part of the actions under the Northwest Climate Change Action Plan.

The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) publish annual data on progress against national sustainable development indicators. Key findings published in January 2008 for the Northwest of England include:

Greenhouse gas emissions

  • The Northwest emitted 16.6 million tonnes carbon equivalent of carbon dioxide in 2005. This is the second highest regional amount and equates to 2.5 tonnes per resident.
  • The proportion of emissions by end-user is broadly simlar to the all England average.

Carbon Dioxide Emissions Domestic 28% Transport 27% Insutry and Commerce 45%
